Hospitality Insurance for restaurants in Melbourne, Australia
Business Insurance Package for restaurants, Fish and Chips, Pizza and Pasta shop and more
What is Restaurant Business Insurance
Running a restaurant in Australia is rewarding — but it also comes with a unique set of risks. From a customer slipping on a wet floor, to a kitchen fire that forces you to close for weeks, to a food poisoning claim from a single bad service, the day-to-day of hospitality can throw plenty of unexpected costs your way.
At GCIS Insurance, we help restaurants across Australia arrange a business insurance pack that is tailored to how they actually trade. As every restaurant is different, we take the time to understand your setup — your cuisine, your cooking methods, your trading hours, your liquor licence, your suppliers, and your lease requirements — before recommending the right level of cover.
We are based in Melbourne and proudly look after restaurant clients across Camberwell, Hawthorn, Kew, Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Carlton, South Yarra, Prahran, Brunswick, Northcote, St Kilda, and Melbourne CBD — as well as restaurants right across greater Melbourne, regional Victoria, and Australia-wide.

What is usually covered under restaurant Business insurance?
Public and Products Liability — covers compensation and legal costs if a customer is injured on your premises, or becomes unwell from the food and drinks you serve. Most landlords will require a minimum of $10 million or $20 million cover before you can sign a lease.
Contents, Stock and Equipment — covers damage or theft of your kitchen equipment, ovens, fridges, cool rooms, POS system, furniture, cutlery, and food and beverage stock.
Glass — covers accidental breakage of shopfront windows, internal glass, mirrors, display cabinets and signage. Often required as part of your lease.
Business Interruption — replaces your lost gross profit and covers ongoing costs like rent, wages and utilities if an insured event forces you to close. Given restaurants often have complex fitouts and specialised kitchens, we usually recommend a longer indemnity period.
Machinery Breakdown (optional deterioration of stock) — covers repair or replacement of essential equipment such as commercial ovens, cool rooms, freezers, and dishwashers, plus the value of stock that spoils as a result.
Money — covers cash on the premises, in the safe, or in transit to the bank.
Theft — covers loss or damage to contents and stock following a break-in.
Tax Audit — covers professional fees if your business is audited by the ATO.
Management Liability — protects the directors and officers of your company from claims such as employment disputes, statutory fines, and other management related exposures.
Cyber Insurance — covers you against cyber events affecting your POS, online booking systems, and customer data.
A restaurant business insurance pack can include a range of covers depending on your business, but generally speaking, below are some of the more common sections taken by restaurant owners.

Only Workers' Compensation is legally required, and only if you employ staff. However, most commercial landlords will require at least $10 million or $20 million of public liability cover before you can sign a lease, and councils often require it for outdoor dining permits.
-
Yes — food poisoning and food contamination claims are covered under the Products Liability section of a standard restaurant insurance policy, provided your business is operating within its declared activities.
-
Restaurants that serve alcohol under a valid liquor licence are generally covered for incidents connected to alcohol service, as long as the venue is operating in accordance with its licence conditions and Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) requirements. It is important to declare your liquor licence and alcohol sales to your insurer up front so the policy responds correctly.
-
No, but the outdoor area needs to be declared to your insurer and included in your public liability cover. Your local council permit will usually also require this to be shown on your Certificate of Currency.
